Dover are hoping Jerahl Hughes’s move from Brighton to the local area will coincide with a big improvement in his discipline.

The youngster arrived late for Tuesday’s 2-0 home win over Bishop’s Stortford to be met with a warning from player-manager Andy Hessenthaler to "grow up."

He responded by coming on as a 66th minute substitute and opening the scoring 11 minutes later to set the club on the road to a first win in the Blue Square South.

"I told him he owed me and to go out and score a goal, which he did," said Hessenthaler. "It’s imperative he sorts himself out off the pitch and I’ve told him to grow up.

"He’s moving from Brighton to Dover and one of our directors has found him a job. Now it’s up to him because the club have bent over backwards to help."

After Hughes opened the scoring in the 77th minute, Adam Birchall added a second in the 79th to seal a deserved win. Dover could also afford to miss a penalty with Lee Browning the culprit.

"If someone had asked me before the start of the season if I would take four points from the first two games, I would have accepted it," said Hessenthaler.

"Considering we’ve had to chop and change at the back because of injuries and suspensions, I think we’ve done well.

"Nicky Southall did well as a stop-gap central defender at Maidenhead on Saturday but I felt we needed his presence in midfield against Bishop’s Stortford so John Keister played there.

"He’s a good talker, which made up for his lack of inches."

Frannie Collin, who twisted an ankle on Tuesday, and Shaun Welford (dead leg) are doubtful for Saturday’s home game against Dorchester. Central defender Olly Schulz will be available after suspension for Monday’s trip to Chelmsford.
