Animal exporters are having talks with Dover Harbour Board about the possibility of resuming live exports from the port.
But the board says no sailings are planned at the moment.
Live animal exports were halted from Dover in April 2011, although they have continued from Ramsgate.
A spokeswoman for the harbour board said that as in previous years, and on their own initiative, potential animal exporters had approached the board and had discussions about a resumption of the trade from Dover.
“The port is legally obliged to seriously consider any application for this, or any other legal trade from the port, in a open minded way, consistent with the potential operator meeting all of the operational requirements laid down by the port and those laid down by government though DEFRA and other agencies.
“To date, no sailings are yet planned for this trade from the Port of Dover.”
Farming unions say they believe the shorter sea route from Dover rather than Ramsgate would improve animal welfare.
