The Mercury is the official media partner for the National Trust’s appeal to raise £1.2 million to buy a section of the White Cliffs of Dover.
The NT wants to buy a stretch of the cliffs just under a mile long, between the NT’s visitor centre at Langdon Cliffs and the South Foreland lighthouse at St Margaret’s. The land is owned by a farmer, who has offered it to the NT – but the deadline for buying it is the end of the year.
Buying the land will mean people will have access to more areas of the clifftop, and that it is cared for in a way that will improve the habitat for wildlife.
The Mercury, part of the KM Group, was approached by the NT to be the media partner for the appeal because of our unrivalled multi-media package. Regular stories about the campaign will appear in the both editions of the Mercury, as well as on Kent Online and on our kmfm radio station.
Coverage will include appeal regular updates, interviews with celebrities who are backing it, and pictures and reports of the events being organised to support it.
Hilary McGrady, National Trust director for London and South East, said: “We are thrilled to have the support of the Mercury and the KM Group for our White Cliffs Appeal.
“This is the trust’s largest ever coastal fundraiser – the £1.2m target is ambitious but we have every hope we can succeed with the support of the public. The White Cliffs are an iconic national landscape, but they are, of course, particularly dear to those in Kent and to have the support of Dover and East Kent Mercury readers will be an enormous boon.
“As a multi-media company, the backing of the KM group will really help us to spread word of the appeal.”
Mercury editor Graham Smith said: “The White Cliffs are a huge part of our environment and heritage, and it is very important that their future can be secured."
