More work needs to be done to a ship which is used for exporting live animals before it can operate from Dover, it has been revealed.

A second berthing trial took place at the port yesterday, after modifications, which were required following the first trial in March, were carried out to the ship Joline.

This afternoon, Dover Harbour Board issued a statement saying it seemed that the modifications had "largely addressed" the issues raised.

"Some outstanding matters require further attention before any subsequent shipment may be accepted by the port.

"The results will now be fully evaluated by Dover Harbour Board and will be communicated to Barco de Vapor (the operators of the ship) for consideration."

The Harbour Board has stressed that the High Court made it clear that port authorities are legally obliged to accept the shipments as they are "a legal trade".

To stop them would require a chance in the law, which is the responsibility of parliament.
