A young mother whose first baby died of cot death five years ago has organised a day of family fun today to raise cash for the charity that helped her cope.

Becky Kennett, 22, from St Martin’s Road, Deal, will host the fundraiser in aid of the Lullaby Trust at RV’s Fun Factory in Whitfield, from noon.

When she was 16, her six-week-old baby Alfie died suddenly, in a cot death.

The ordeal was eased by the help she received from the Lullaby Trust, which was known at the time as FSID – the Foundation for the Study of Sudden Infant Death.

“When I lost Alfie, they gave me a befriender, who I could call at any time. It was a friend who had felt my pain" Becky Kennett

Now Becky has two happy children, Kayden, 20 months, and Roxanne, nine months.

But she said she could never have coped with the worry as a new parent without the support of the Lullaby Trust.

She said: “They were amazing. I couldn’t have done it without them.

“When I lost Alfie, they gave me a befriender, who I could call at any time. It was a friend who had felt my pain.

“Then when I had Kayden (aged 20 months) they straight away gave me monitoring equipment, I had more visits from health visitors and I was given a card, in case anything happened and I had to take him to hospital.

“It meant he would see a consultant straight away. I don’t think I could have coped at all without that breathing monitor.”

As a thank you to the charity, and to raise awareness of sudden infant death and how to prevent it, Becky is holding the fundraiser at RV’s.

She said: “It will hopefully be a lovely family afternoon.

“There will be face painting, a raffle, tombola, people can throw wet sponges at people in stocks, there will be a cake sale and a competition to guess how many sweets are in a jar.”

Entry to RV’s will be free, with a donation to the charity.

Raffle prizes include a P&O Ferries crossing for one car and up to nine passengers, a meal voucher from Top Wok Chinese take-away and a haircut from Men’s Style by Aaron.

A free breakfast and drink has been pledged by the Corner Cafe, on the corner of Herschell Square, and Dover Road, Walmer.
