Dover MP Charlie Elphicke says he is amazed how much rubbish gets into the River Dour and he has criticised one of the town’s supermarkets for not helping to clear it up.

His comments came after he joined a group of White Cliffs Country Partnership volunteers on Friday to remove litter from parts of the river through the town.

“I was amazed just how much rubbish gets into the river, how many people give up their time to volunteer to help the clean up and that Morrisons does not join in when most of the rubbish clearly comes from the supermarket!”

Partnership manager Kirk Alexander said: “There were fewer volunteers than usual on the August river clean, but thanks to the hard work of the volunteers 69 bags of rubbish were cleared.”

The Mercury asked Morrisons for a comment, but nothing has yet been received.

The next river clean will be on September 28 and everyone is invited to come along and help. All equipment is provided.
