A Vauxhall collided with a Tesco delivery van, causing the car to crash through a nearby bus stop before smashing the front of the takeaway.

Police, fire and ambulance services attended the scene on The Strand at about 4.50pm yesterday.

The road was shut off after officers found the food outlet's gas meter had been damaged.

Thankfully, a gas engineer was called and confirmed the restaurant - which is next to the Dover & Deal Conservative Association - was safe.

Deal resident Leslie Burgess said: "I arrived at Bengal Spice shortly after this happened.

"Police and fire brigade were at the scene when I got there and blocked the road.

"I don’t think anyone was injured but an ambulance was in attendance – a staff member had just opened the restaurant and had a narrow escape."

A Kent Police spokesman confirmed officers were called at around 4.50pm to the two car collision.

He said: "Following the collision, one of the vehicles involved went into a nearby bus stop and business premises, causing damage to a gas meter.

"Officers attended alongside Kent Fire and Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service and a gas engineer, who carried out checks to ensure the scene was safe.

"No serious injuries were reported and officers had left the scene by around 7.15pm."

A worker at the restaurant confirmed on Monday morning that the restaurant and take away service remains closed.
