Ten primary schools in Deal have refreshed their libraries with a more diverse range of fiction and non-fiction.

The books have been donated by the DealBooksForChange crowdfunding campaign, led by Aurelija Povilaike and supported by Floury Crum and Anna McElligott, who worked in collaboration with the Deal Bookshop.

The campaign's aim was to provide school libraries with books that feature diverse characters of colour, children with disabilities, strong female protagonists and boys and girls who are not afraid to be different.

With public donations, a Kent County Council community grant and individual book donations, the campaign successfully delivered a box full of books to each of Deal’s primary schools.

In addition, the PTFA at Kingsdown & Ringwould Primary and Friends of Northbourne at Northbourne Primary match-funded the donated books and both schools have seen their libraries expanded by nearly 50 books in total.

Assistant head teacher at Kingsdown & Ringwould, Ashley Parr, said: “We are all very grateful to the campaign.

“The children have been enjoying reading the books this week and discussing the themes that they promote.”
