Creeks, quays and seawalls feature in the work of contemporary painter Simon Carter who is the focus of Linden Hall Studio's coming out of lockdown exhibition.
Named Walking Home, the collection at the Deal gallery breathes in inspiration from the landscapes within a few miles of his studio, in the Essex marshes.
In hues that mirror the terrain, the paintings are derived from rudimentary drawings.
The contemporary artist who is president of the Colchester Art Society and director of Victor Batte-Lav Foundation explained: "I don't go far. I have several regular routes that I walk, usually along the seawalls, carrying an A4 sketch pad and a small box of graphite sticks and crayons. It is like going to church or the library, rifling through the books, knowing what you are looking for, making notes, enjoying the quiet, seeing what comes to light, hoping for the unexpected."
His show is part of the gallery's rolling exhibition, on the ground floor and includes 16 of his pieces dated between 2019 and 2021. Walking Home runs from May 18 to June 5.
Going forward the rolling programme will feature a variety of solo, two person and group exhibitions from established names and emerging talent.
Meanwhile, bursts of colour continue to fill the space in the airy first floor.
This makes up the studio's ever evolving collection of often well known, selected artists. Many of these exhibitors you will recognise as popular features of previous exhibitions.
There is also ocassionally an invited guest.
The work on show boasts five loaned pieces from the estate of the late John Hoyland RA (1934 - 2011).
Gallery manager Myles Corley saod: "It is a great honour to be able to have them available to show to our audience."
There are also eight pieces by the late Clyde Hopkins (1846-2018), Jennifer Durrant, Arthur Neil, John Hoyland, Daisy Cook, Deal's Parisienne Beat Hotel photographer Harold Chapman and potter Cherry Tewfik.
Mr Corley added: "It has always been a sense of great pride to us that we have managed to secure the most highly regarded and respected artists and their estates to trust us to show their works, and make the top echelons British art world aware of the town of Deal."
Linden Hall Studio is at 32 St George's Road, Deal. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-4pm.
