Walkers taking part in the 2014 White Cliffs Walking Festival are nearing the end of their rambles, but are by no means slowing down.

Organised by the White Cliffs Ramblers – the branch of the national Ramblers organisation covering south Kent – the festival will feature 32 walks over seven days.

Today is the fifth day of the festival and on the schedule are walks in Deal, Walmer and Northbourne.

Three Pits Walk: Meet at Northbourne Village Hall car park at 10am. The 18-mile walk industrial heritage walk visits the sites of three pits; Tilmanstone, Snowdown and Betteshanger. It will be led by East Kent Mercury editor Graham Smith.

Alternatively at 10am, meet leader David Jones in Kingsdown Road car park, for a 10-mile walk inland to St. Margaret’s, returning via the White Cliffs. The Coastal Delight Walk offers superb sea and country views. Walkers can buy a pub lunch or bring their own.

The final walk of the day will uncover the Tales of Deal Gone By. Meet at the entrance to Deal Pier at 2.30pm. The walk led by story-teller and writer Roisin Murray will last an hour and a half. Roisin will cover the history of numerous landmarks in the town including the Pier, Timeball Tower, Middle Street and its pubs and the real story of Nelson and Lady Hamilton as well as ghost stories of the Goodwin Sands. The walk cost £2 per person.
