Two people have been nominated for the by-election for a district councillor for the Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory Ward in Dover.

Deborah Boulares will represent the Conservatives while Peter Wallace is the Labour candidate.

The by-election, which takes place on May 2, was caused by the death of former Mayor Cllr Diane Smallwood.

Meanwhile, Dover licensee Paul McMullan, who was appointed local press officer of the UK Independence Party a few weeks ago, is standing at the county council elections as an independent, campaigning to save village pubs, after he claimed UKIP failed to back his nomination as a party candidate.

He is standing in Dover North division where the other candidates are Linda Hook (Liberal Democrat), Linda Keen (Labour) and Steve Manion (Conservative).

In Dover Town, where there are two seats, the candidates are Pauline Beresford (Cons), Pam Brivio (Lab), Nigel Collor (Cons), Gordon Cowan (Lab), Janet Hilton (Lib Dem), Clive Meredith (Lib Dem) and Peter Myers (UKIP).

There are five candidates for Dover West, Gordon Killip (UKIP), Peter Lodge (Lib Dem), Geoff Lymer (Cons), Vic Matcham (Ind), and Mick Smith (Lab).

The two seats in the Deal division are being contested by Trevor Bond (Cons), Michael Eddy (Lab), Adrian Friend (Cons), Robin Hook (Lib Dem), Peter Ripley (UKIP), Eileen Rowbotham (Lab) and Sarah Smith (Lib Dem).

At Sandwich, the candidates are David Pestell (Lab), Leyland Ridings (Cons), Mark Stubbings (UKIP) and Russell Timpson (Lib Dem).
