A rally and protest march has been held in Dover opposing the port privatisation proposals and supporting workers rights.
It was organised by the Unite union as part of an international day of action, co-ordinated by the International Transport Federation.
The rally, held on Wednesday October 13, called for the standardisation of terms and conditions across the EU for workers involved in transport logistics and for dock workers.
Marchers gathered in Snargate Street, Dover, before crossing the A20 onto the seafront where they stayed for some time. Fewer than 30 people took part.
They then returned to Bluebirds in Snargate Street for speeches.
Unite national officer, Ron Webb said: "People want to make it absolutely clear that the privatisation of Dover docks would be a disaster.
"The UK is an island nation. We need a first class sea port like Dover to be in public hands. There is simply too much at stake to leave the running of this vital link to Europe in the hands of those who will milk this national treasure for profits."
Responding to Unite's claims a Port of Dover spokesperson said that other first class UK sea ports were not in public hands.
"In fact most other major ports in the UK are privately owned, operated and very successful. Privatisation is required in order that there can be the necessary investment in the Port of Dover to grow the business, create jobs, new opportunities and value that can only be achieved in the private sector.
"It is this that will ensure that the Port of Dover remains the first class sea port the UK wishes it to be."
