Remembering Marines slaughtered by IRA
00:00, 23 September 2004
FAMILY and friends of the 11 Royal Marines killed in the bombing at the School of Music at Deal in 1989 today attended a memorial service at the Garden of Remembrance.
The service marked the 15th anniversary of the IRA explosion and Royal Marines from Portsmouth attended the service held outside the remains of the concert hall.
The horror took place at the Royal Marines' School of Music on September 22 1989.
A minute's silence was observed this morning at 8.22am. That's the moment the explosion ripped through the concert hall.
A memorial service has been staged at the site of the explosion every year since the tragedy. Some 20 other bandsmen were hurt in the explosion.
The music school is now based at the Royal Marines' headquarters in Portsmouth.
