Those who have sacrificed their tomorrows for our today were remembered in services across Deal, Dover and Sandwich today.

A remembrance ceremony, organised by the Veterans’ Association of Deal, took place at the war memorial at Deal Walmer & District War Memorial Hospital this morning, with ex-service organisations, dignitaries and residents.

The service, conducted by the Rev John Lines, began with a two minute silence.

Among the dignitaries was Deal mayor Cllr Deryck Murray, along with Dover District Council chairman Cllr Paul Watkins.

More people attended the Sandwich service at the War Memorial in Market street than ever before.

Mayor of Sandwich Cllr Paul Graeme said: "There must have been at least 400 people here."

The service, by the Rev Canon Mark Roberts began with a two minute's silence with Last Post and Reveille played by a young bugler.

Wreaths were laid by a host of local organisations including local authorities Sandwich Town Council, Dover District Council and Kent County Council. Scouts and Girlguiding representatives made contributions. Bill Chesterfield, 94, laid a wreath on behalf of the Royal Air Force Association.

Sandwich resident and St Peter’s Church volunteer, Ann Harrison-Brooks read a number of poems at a performance of Fauré’s Requiem by the church choir in the evening, including one she wrote herself for a service earlier this year.

She said: “It’s going to be a very poignant service and an opportunity to just reflect.

Remembrance Sunday was marked at St Andrew’s Church, West Street, with a solemn Requiem Mass for the Fallen at 10am, followed by an Act of Remembrance at 11am.

A Remembrance service was held at Dover War Memorial in Biggin Street, Dover today also. A service was held yesterday (Saturday) at the Western Docks in Dover.
