Replica of Matthew causes a stir at Sandwich
12:08, 12 June 2012
A spectacular welcome and a fond farewell were given to a replica medieval ship that caused a stir in Sandwich for five days.
The Matthew is a copy of the caravel sailing ship that discovered America on John Cabot’s 1497 Voyage of Discovery.
It has appeared in numerous films including the Chronicles of Narnia, and was for five days a must see in Sandwich - a replica medieval ship in a medieval port.
Skipper Rob Salvidge said: “The welcome we received was fantastic - just what we needed after the Jubilee.”
The Matthew sailed to Sandwich straight after taking part in the Thames Jubilee Pageant.
