Homes development at Dover Road, Sandwich, needs better access before council supports it

An alternative access route is needed before councillors will support a scheme to build almost 70 new houses off Dover Road.

The plan for 67 homes with garages, access, parking and landscaping on the former Kumor Nursery site in Sandwich was submitted by DHA Planning on behalf of Ms KK Putnam to Dover District Council in March.

To date, 59 letters of objection and only five in support have been logged with the authority, with concerns over the congested road, poor water pressure and privacy.

The plans came before Sandwich Town Council for a second time this year on Monday evening after amendments to the planning statement were added.

But members have continued to reject the plans because the proposed access at the junction of Deal Road is not suitable.

Cllr Jeff Sneller labelled it a “ridiculous application”.

He said: “We’ve had this before and we suggested a different access route but it remains unchanged.

“It’s the most congested route in Sandwich with cars parked along both sides of the road. There’s no visual space whatsoever.”

Cllr John Bragg said: “We’ve recommended refusal on various grounds and they really haven’t taken on board that it’s the wrong place to develop.

“The exit needs to be on the Woodnesborough Road.”

Cllr MJ Holloway said: “More housing is needed in Sandwich but I think this development would have a huge impact on the Sandwich Technology School and the people that live there.”

He asked if they could ask the developers if there was some means of a compromise that would tackle the concerns of the community.

It was suggested the entrance could be at the Bellar’s Bush roundabout.

Members resolved to reject the plans and only give favourable consideration if an alternative access is found.

Cllr David Wood was the only member of the council to vote for the application, stating the need for housing was his reasoning.
