A campaign has been launched to persuade the Olympic torch relay
organisers to allow a Dover runner to carry the flame through the
town.
Keith Walters – known as Running Keith – is a familiar sight
taking part in many athletic events, including fun runs and
half-marathons.
Nominations for torch bearers closed last week and now a
Facebook page suggesting he would be an ideal person to carry the
flame through Dover has received more than 1,620 supporters in less
than two weeks.
“Keith deserves this honour,” said Thomas Thatcher, one of those
behind the campaign. “A lot of people believe he should be
chosen.”
Supporter Chris Longley added: “If anyone deserves the spirit of
the Olympics, it’s Running Keith.”
Even former townsfolk on the other side of the world have joined
the campaign.
“Keith gets our votes from Brisbane, Australia,” said Kelly
Stoakes. “He’s been running since I was a kid. Finally, this would
be his moment.”
