Sandown Primary School looks to beat vandals with cameras fitted by PAH

00:02, 02 August 2017

A school which has been repeatedly targeted by vandals has received security equipment thanks to a local building firm.

P A Hollingsworth (PAH) in Eastry has donated cameras and solar powered security lights at Sandown Primary’s Green Zone.

It comes after the Golf Road school suffered several vandal attacks where trees were damaged, items smashed and thrown into the pond and posters burned.

The last attack, in June, also saw yobs cause disruption to the birds who were nesting there and whose progress the children had been monitoring.

PAH employee Sam Martin learned first hand from his daughter Lola, a Sandown pupil, of the upset caused through the vandalism at the site.

After talking with his boss, he contacted Sandown with the offer of practical help.

The security equipment has now been fitted ensuring the area is protected during the six-week break.

Head teacher Kate Luxford said: “We cannot thank Sam and PAH enough. The integrity of our school playing field and the area of green zone is vital for the well-being and education of our pupils.

“It is important to us that learning time isn’t spent on clearing up after trespassers and the damage they cause.

“PAH show the best of Deal where communities come together to help each other.”

The green zone, at the bottom of the school field, is used most days by the pupils to learn about nature by building dens, making campfires and cooking.

Pupils previously described it to the Mercury as a “special place for people” and “a nature wonderland”.

Green zone co-ordinatior Anne Collins said: “Our local PCSO has been updated with the extra security provision and the help from PAH. We now very much hope that we can get on with providing a unique environment where Sandown pupils can feel safe and are able to pursue their own projects, have outdoor experiences and Forest School adventures and enjoy their learning.”
