A chamber member promoting a new £5 shopping scheme has warned of the closure of "several" small businesses if people continue to neglect the High Street.

Businesses in Deal are taking part in Fiver Fest, a two-week scheme aimed at attracting shoppers to send just £5 a week locally.

Up to 150 members of Deal and Walmer Chamber of Trade and Love Local are taking part, displaying posters of the special offers they are running until October 24.

Secretary, Peter Davies, has highlighted that a lack of support for these independent firms will lead to closures.

He said: "It's trying to breath some fire of life into the High Street and help the businesses.

"There are a lot them that are finding it hard and we need to give them our support.

"We re trying to do anything we can to help the High Street because we are at risk of losing several businesses in the New Year if we keep on."

Bonne Bombe is offering its angel bath bombs which promote wellbeing for £5.

Owner Michael Wood said: "We've been shut for four months with no income and the bills are still there, so we need people's support now more than ever."

Zoom Photos are reducing orders up to £6.50 to £5, Swanstitch is offering items up to £7.50 for £5 and Reiki healer Morag Turner is offering a 20 minute session in distance healing for £5.

The scheme was set up by Totally Locally, an award-winning worldwide movement aimed at makings towns stronger and more vibrant.

They run the Fiver Fest three times a year and this month, more than 100 towns are taking part.

Mr Davies added: "They say if every adult spent just £5 per week with small businesses rather than chains it would mean £5.9 million per year going directly into the local economy.

"We can't decry of the High Street, thinking the web is the answer. Use the High Street first. You might be surprised what you can find."

In other attempts to help out the High Street Mr Davies is in talks with Dover District Council to hold a meeting in early November to discuss more help and advice for small businesses.

Working with Deal Delivers, the chamber is also planning a late night shopping evening on a Friday in early December to encourage residents to do their Christmas shopping locally.

Sandwich is also taking part in Fiver Fest for the second year running.

Dan Friend, vice-president of Sandwich Chamber of Commerce, said: "Shoppers really showed their support to businesses last year and proved what a difference spending just £5 locally can make.

"We hope people can do the same again this year, particularly in light of the challenges small businesses are facing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic."

Petals and Flours, Sweetie Celebrations, Sandwich Stationary, Kim Woods Jeweller and The Beach Hut Cafe are among the businesses offering special deals.
