Toilets could be closed as councils reach agreement
15:16, 26 January 2011
Agreement has almost been reached over the future of public toilets in Dover – and it looks like those at Ladywell will be closed permanently.
It has taken more than a year for the town and district councils to come up with a proposal and at least four shops or businesses in the town are expected to be asked to allow people to use their toilets in return for a fee from the town council.
Last January the district council closed the toilets at Buckland Bridge and Ladywell saying they had been unable to reach agreement with the town council over who should run and pay for them.
As reported in the Mercury some weeks ago, finance and general purposes committee chairman Cllr Gordon Cowan said the council had been looking at a “mix and match” provision.
Now town councillors are being recommended to take over the provision of toilets, the closure of those at Ladywell and see that funding is concentrated on the toilets at Stembrook.
