Marmaris Kebab in South Street, Deal, will appeal to stay open after council revoke its licence

A popular kebab shop in Deal has said it will do all that it can to stay open after the council’s decision to revoke its licence.
Marmaris Kebab in South Street has had its licence taken away after police felt it seriously breached one of the four licensing objectives – prevention of crime and disorder – during an incident last October.
The decision was made by the licensing committee at Dover District Chambers last Tuesday.
Brothers Muharrem and Tuncay Yildirim, who own and manage the takeaway shop, have said they will lodge an appeal as soon as they receive the paperwork.
Tuncay Yildirim said: “We haven’t got the paperwork yet but we will be appealing.
“This is how we pay our bills. It’s what we do for a living. If we lose our licence, it will affect us 100% in every way.”
He said that this would be the fourth time they had been taken to court in a bid to remain open.
Police licensing officer, PC Stephen Alexander, said: “A serious matter was brought to my attention by a colleague investigating an allegation of an assault.
“As a result of viewing CCTV from the shop I was left with no alternative but to bring the matter to the attention of the Local Authority Licensing Committee by means of a review.
“I understand that requesting a revocation of a licence would have consequences on the business and in the nine years I have been in post as the licensing officer have only asked for this on one occasion.
“However I felt there was no other option.”
If the owners appeal the case will be heard at magistrates’ court and the existing opening hours prior to the hearing will remain in place.
