17 more migrants intercepted in the Channel and brought to Dover

More migrants have been intercepted in the Channel today and brought ashore.

Border Force teams were alerted to an attempted crossing off the Kent coast at 3.20am and found 17 people on board.

In total, 11 men and 6 women, who are thought to be from Iraq, were brought to Dover.

This weekend has seen a huge surge in migrants coming over from Calais, with more than 300 people being picked up by Border Force.

Across the Channel, 10 migrants were rescued from a boat with engine failure six nautical miles off Boulogne-sur-Mer.

They were taken back to France and handed over to border police, French authorities said.

Since the Covid-19 lockdown was announced March 23, at least 853 migrants have been intercepted off the Kent coast.

There were eight incidents on Friday, making it a record day for attempted migrant crossings.
