Two newly-elected councillors carried out their first civic duties - getting soaked with wet sponges.

New Dover Town councillors Keith Sansum and John Heron put themselves in the stocks during a Halloween fundraising event two days after they won by-elections.

It was for teenager cancer victim Kelly Turner who needs £1 million pounds for specialist treatment in America.

Also volunteering for soggy smacks in the chops were three other councillors, Ben Glayzer and Peter Wallace and Keith Morris.

Saturday’s fun day was organised by Clarendon and Wesbury Community Association in Dover and has raised at least £1,000.

Cllr Sansum, who is also that group’s chairman teased visitors into throwing the sponges: “Come on, it’s because of them that your council tax has gone up.”

Knowing that the local press can get criticism too Mercury reporter Sam Lennon decided to take some punishment.

Cllr’s Heron, the first to get soaked, said: “This event was the true face of Dover, residents and members of the local Clarendon and Westbury community coming together to get behind this most worth while of causes.

“It was a fantastic idea and I was very happy to support it.”

Cllr Wallace said “Kelly Turner is someone very special to the people of Dover and every week people are thinking up new ideas to raise money.

"Someone suggested we should do this again in Pencester Gardens and let people pay money to throw sponges at councillors. That should raise a lot of money and I’d like to do that too!”

It is thought that overall hundreds of people attended the fun day, at Clarendon and Westbury Community Centre in Belgrave Road.

This week it was calculated that £1,027.63 was raised with more expected from sources such as promised donations.

It began with a daytime fun day with stalls, face painting and a bouncy castle, and continue with a children’s Halloween disco that evening with fancy dress competitions.

Kelly and her mum and dad, Martin and Linda, briefly attended the evening event.

Labour’s Cllr Heron and non-party candidate Cllr Sansum, were elected in two Dover Town Council by-elections last Thursday .

Cllr Sansum is a town member for the immediate local area, Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory.
Cllr Wallace, of Labour, is also the local ward member for both town and district councils .

Cllr Glayzer is a Ukip member and Cllr Morris a Conservative, both on the district council.
