Balloons of peace released above Dover

00:00, 27 September 2001

MISS Dover, Nicola Millard, released 24 balloons as a sign of peace from the top of a Dover Transport Museum bus during a fun day held at the indoor market in the town.

Nicola, together with Dover Town Centre Management Board member Keith Sansum, opened the event which raised about £1,000 for the Demelza House children's hospice. The event was so popular it has now been decided to hold it annually. It is sponsored by the Town Centre Management and included music, dancing, magic and a host of other attractions.

The car park at the rear of the market was closed to vehicles and filled with stalls for the day, with music provided by the One2One disco.

Mr Puff, a finalist in Dover's midsummer talent show, provided magic for the crowds and toured the town with Toni Clifford, Town Centre Management's local historian, who was dressed as a 19th century middle-class lady. Among those dancing was five-year-old Bridie Douglas who had won first prize in her age group at the previous week's Model of the Year show at Dover Town Hall.
