Campervan people smuggler extradited and jailed at Canterbury Crown Court

A man who helped smuggle four Albanian men into the UK has been extradited to the Britain and has been jailed.
British national Liam Fontana facilitated the hiring of a campervan to bring the men into British soil.
The 36-year old was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment at Canterbury Crown Court yesterday.
On October 13 2017, border force officers intercepted a British-registered motor home at the inbound Freight Lanes in Dover.
Four men were discovered during the search of the vehicle: two were found squeezed into a storage locker at the rear and two on the top bunk above the driver area.
Two men who hired the campervan were arrested, cautioned and taken to Canterbury Police Station to be interviewed for their involvement.
This January, they were sentenced to three years and nine months at Canterbury Crown Court.
Investigators found out the contact details provided to the caravan hire company were Liam Fontana's.
It was also discovered that Mr Fontana was regularly contacting the motorhome drivers during as they were being smuggled into the country.
He was later arrested and cautioned and taken to Luton Police Station to be interviewed for his suspected involvement.
Mr Fontana was already serving a prison sentence in France from July 2019 for another crime.
He had to be extradited to the UK and remanded to attend this trial in October 2021.
The trial started on 1 December.

"This sentencing sends a clear message to criminals that we will stop you, and we will do everything we can to bring you to justice, including extraditing you from another country if we have to."
