Chaos threatened by French lorry drivers' dispute

00:00, 28 November 2002

LAST-MINUTE talks are taking place today to avoid industrial action by French lorry drivers which could result in big traffic build-ups in Dover and other parts of Kent next week.

The French drivers are seeking higher pay, fewer working hours and early retirement.

The Kent-based Freight Transport Association is warning that current reports and past experience suggest that French drivers may blockade roads, distribution and fuel depots and possibly ports and Eurotunnel.

If the action results in hold-ups in Calais then there is likely to be a knock-on effect in the UK with lorries delayed at Dover and on the M20. The action is threatened to begin 10pm on Sunday.
