Six fire engines and around 20 firefighters are on the scene having arrived when the three-storey end-of-terrace property, reportedly home to an elderly resident, was already well alight.

Flames have spread through the home and the roof has partially collapsed but have been prevented from reaching neighbouring homes.

The adjoining house has been evacuated and volunteers are supporting residents.

The fire service says officers are working in challenging weather conditions as they try to bring the blaze under control.

They confirmed the explosion heard during the early stages of the fire was windows shattering in the house.

Crews are wearing breathing apparatus and using main jets and hose reel jets to tackle the fire.

Residents living in the nearby area have been asked to close windows and doors due to large volumes of smoke.

Police spokesman Andy Saunders confirmed there was a fire and officers were assisting with traffic management.

South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service have all been approached for comment.

It is unclear how the fire started and an investigation is expected to commence tomorrow.
