A family is facing an agonising wait as a father-of-four remains unconscious abroad after a serious motorbike smash.

Kie Mathias, 37, of Lydden near Dover, is in hospital with broken bones and head injuries after an accident on his hired motorcycle.

He was involved in a collision with a trolleybus – a cross between a tram and a bus – in Athens last Friday.

Because he is too unwell to talk, his family do not know if he has the insurance for his medical care and transportation home.

Kie’s brother, Dan Mathias, who flew to Greece to be by his side, said: “It is an agonising waiting game but someone in the family will be with him all the time.

“I haven’t even bought a return ticket back from Greece but I am staying at least until our mum and dad come over.”

Dan says their father, Steven, flew to Greece almost immediately after hearing the news, but travelled home on Monday night and will return with their mother Bernice on Thursday.

Kie – who was travelling alone – has a broken leg, multiple fractured ribs, internal bruising and head injuries, although no surgery is needed.

But he is completely unconscious, under sedation and on a ventilator.

Dan has now set up a Gofundme page to help raise vital funds.

The page states: “Kie was unfortunately involved in a serious motorcycle accident while visiting Athens in Greece.

“As it stands we are unable to confirm if his holiday package included insurance as we are not able to access his phone.

“We are assuming no at this stage.

“He is currently in a serious condition and sedated while they assess the full extent of his injuries.

“Once he is in a stable condition our number one priority is to fly him back to the UK for continued treatment.

“Me and my dad arrived in Greece just hours after being informed about the accident.

“We managed to track down where he was staying as he had hotel keys with his personal items.

“I was deeply saddened by the conditions he was staying in.

“The hotel was in a run-down area and the room was horrendous.

“I imagine he hired a bike to make the most of his trip and get out of the hotel.

“Kie is a father to four beautiful girls who really need him home and well.

“We desperately need help paying his medical bills and getting him back home as soon as possible please help by donating anything you can afford.”

Experienced motorcyclist Kie - a plumbing engineer - had been on a five-day solo trip when the accident happened. He was due to fly home on Sunday.

The crowdfunding page has raised £3,215 out of a target figure of £50,000 as of today.

Once Kie is stable the family plan to fly him home for continued medical treatment in the UK.
