Labour have gained one seat and held another in a series of by-elections.

Charlotte Zosseder kept Tower Hamlets for the party in a Dover Town Council poll following the death of former mayor Veronica Philpott on May 26.

The 37-year-old mum has lived in the town for several years and works for Kent County Council’s learning disabilities team.

Yesterday's polls also brought in a new Labour member for the council’s St Radigund’s ward, Ian Palmer.

He replaces independent Alan Shirley.

A by-election for Sandwich Town Council on the same day also saw Amanda Felton hold the Sandwich North seat for the Conservatives.

That poll came after the death of Cllr Christopher Trim on May 20.

In the fourth by-election that day David Beaney and Martin Hibbert were both voted onto Alkham Parish Council.
