A new community café has served nearly 2,000 meals in its first three months.

The Sunrise Café in charges on a pay what you can afford basis on the principle that no-one should go hungry.

It is a project of the homelessness charity Dover Outreach Centre and opened at its base in Victory House, Snargate Street, on July 3.

The eaterie welcomes all and meals are served by 13 volunteers.

Noel Beamish, acting chief executive, said: “We’re extremely grateful to everyone who has visited our café.

"There is much repeat custom and it is heart-warming to know that local people are prepared to help and support those less fortunate than themselves.”

One Sunrise volunteer said: “The café encourages compassion and care and fosters the realisation that we could all fall on hard times.”

Another said: "Everyone is welcomed and made to feel comfortable.”

The Sunrise is open from 8am to 2pm Mondays to Saturdays and still needs volunteers.

Split shifts are available including 7.30 am to 11.30 am or 11.30 am to 3pm.
