Firefighters have been called to a cellar alight in Castle Street in Dover.
Two crews from Dover attended just before 2pm and used breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet to put out the flames.
Police are also on the scene to cordon off the area.
A breathing apparatus team went into the three-storey building and are using a hose reel and positive pressure ventilation fan to put the fire out.
A spokesman for KFRS said: "Please avoid the area as the road has been closed while firefighting operations take place."
There are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
As well as police, gas safety engineers are also on the scene.
