Dover firefighters leave large haystack in Shepherdswell field to burn out

A large haystack in Shepherdswell continues to burn this morning after firefighters took the decision not to extinguish it.

A crew from Dover was called to the blazing 100m by 25m stack in a field off Westcourt Lane at around midnight.

Firefighter Becky Meredith said: “It was completely alight when we arrived.

“We didn’t put it out because it would be too difficult logistically. It’s better just to leave it to burn out under controlled conditions.

“We made sure it wasn't close to any houses and handed it over to the farmer who was aware.

“It’s still burning now.”

Firefighters left the scene after a couple of hours.

The cause of the fire is not known.
