Emergency services descended on Folkestone Road at about 5.10am after the crash involving a grey BMW 120d and a white Ford transit van.

Both drivers died at the scene, while a third man – the passenger in the transit – was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Flowers and other tributes have been left at the side of the road for Mr Butterworth, who was also known as Butts.

One note said he had "always been a good mate".

"To you, my brother, I can't believe this... so many funny, crazy memories over the years," it continued.

"Thank you for always being a good mate to me, you were a silly sausage but I wouldn't have you any other way. I'll think of you always. Love you Butts."

Another read: "How are you leaving us like this?

"Was with you just yesterday, don't be drifting too much up there. We love you man."

As well as the notes and flowers, a number of candles were lit at the roadside.

Packets of Haribo sweets and cans of Red Bull and Stella Artois have also been left at the scene.

Tributes have also been paid to the other victim of the crash, named locally as Stef Hayles, from Hawkinge, who was on his way to work when the accident happened.

Friends of Mr Hayles said they were stunned to hear of his death, adding their thoughts were with his partner Sharne.

Kev Hutchinson posted on Facebook: "So, so sorry you're gone. You are a legend and always will be."

Chaydon Kemp added: "Top fella, always the best to be taken before the worst. RIP Steffy boy."

Another friend, Craig Bramwell, added: "Absolutely tragic news to hear this morning. On your way to work to earn your crust and provide for your family. My heart goes out to your family. Rest easy up there."
