A Kent MP has spoken to the new Prime Minister about a "frightening" incident in which an asylum seeker walked into a woman's house.

Dover Conservative Natalie Elphicke says she has discussed Sunday's events in Aycliffe - which have made headlines across the country - directly with Rishi Sunak.

The young asylum seeker had been among a group who landed at the nearby Shakespeare Beach.

Sue Doyle, 59, told how he walked into her house in Old Folkestone Road and demanded to use her phone, before asking her to drive him almost 300 miles to Manchester.

He was arrested by police and then de-arrested, before being handed over to immigration officials.

Mrs Elphicke said: "The fact is, these migrants should never have landed on our shores. They should have been intercepted on the French beaches before they could set off.

"I fully understand residents’ concerns about illegal arrivals on our local beaches and how frightening this can be.

"I contacted the Home Secretary and Kent Police immediately upon hearing about the Aycliffe situation at the weekend.

"This week I also raised the issue directly with the Prime Minister.

"It’s clear that the attempts to tackle the Channel crisis are failing at every level. The situation is now out of control.

"Restoring order at the border is vital and I will continue to do all I can to see the small boats crisis is brought to an end."

Residents KentOnline spoke to yesterday said they were unnerved by the incident, with some saying they were locking their doors.

Rishi Sunak became Prime Minister on Tuesday, the third in two months, after formally being appointed by King Charles III.
