Dover and Gravesend named in worst towns in UK top 10 survey

12:55, 01 July 2017

A survey of the UK's least favourite towns to live in has been released... and it's not good reading for two places in Kent.

Dover has been named the worst place in the whole country while Gravesend also makes the top 10.

The list, published by website ilivehere.co.uk, asked residents to vote for the "least salubrious dump in this septic isle".

So if you're from the great towns of Gravesend or Dover, you may want to look away now. Or if you're intrigued about what people had to say, don't say we didn't warn you.

Joining the likes of Blackpool, Hull, Luton, Oldham and Sunderland, Gravesend was ranked as the seventh worst town in the UK in the top 10.

The town, described as a "festering cat terd", returns to the list this year and Medway does not get away scot-free from the damnation either.

The website says: "It’s a well known fact, the further you travel up the M2 in North Kent, the more grim the urban conurbations become. That’s right, when you leave Medway and think, “surely things can’t get worse”, you have to steel yourself for Gravesham."

Dover, described as the worst place to live in England in 2017, is "straight in at number one".

It pipped Hull by 16 votes and a viral voting campaign "driven by faux outrage" that Dover was even on the shortlist did not stop it coming out on top.

The article reads: "We have often been accused of ‘bashing the north’. Hopefully a town in the South East being voted the cherry on top of the cake, puts that accusation to rest."

One reader in particular had an especially grim view of the town: "Let us for a moment imagine that the British Isles are the silhouette of an old man. Scotland is his cap, Cornwall his toes, Anglia his curved spine, making Dover his herpes infested hole."
