A seal spotted in Dover's River Dour has still not been caught, despite many attempts.

Vet Jeremy Stattersfield was first called to the scene at about 2pm on Thursday, after the initial sighting sparked a call to the police and the RSPCA.

After reports children were throwing stones at it, an RSPCA team attempted to catch the mammal but had no luck.

Mr Stattersfield, of Burnham House Veterinary Surgery in Castle Street, Dover, warned that if it is not caught soon, it might not survive.

The seal has been drumming up a lot of support over the last few days, with many onlookers watching as the unsuccessful rescue attempts unfold.

So KentOnline's sister paper, the Dover Mercury, has this week given its readers three names to pick from beginning with the letter S.

The RSPCA has clarified that the seal is a boy so, with that in mind, the names are:

• Sammy
• Sebastian, or
• Sean.

A statement from the RSPCA said: “We have made a number of attempts to rescue the young seal so he can be checked over and taken into care if needed.

“It’s not uncommon for seals to venture up rivers away from the sea and at present this seal appears to be doing well.

“We are putting plans in place to catch him so he can be checked over.

“We would urge members of the public not to approach him.

“Seals are wild animals and have a nasty bite.

“It is also advised to keep dogs on leads in the area.”
