French national day of action at fuel refineries leads to extra demand at Dover
18:00, 26 May 2016
A national day of strike action in France has halted aircraft and trains, with fuel supplies disrupted after days of protests.
Workers unhappy with planned reforms to employment laws have blockaded fuel refineries.
With many people planning to head across the Channel for half term, drivers are being urged to stock up in Kent before they travel.
The warning comes after British drivers became stranded after French petrol stations ran out of fuel.
Speaking at Dover, Rebecca Williams told kmfm today: "There's actually a petrol station - a service station - at the entrance to the ferry terminal here.
"I went in and they have said there has been an increase in the number of people filling up at the pumps, and they have had people calling up all day just to check they have fuel."
The AA said it has received several calls from motorists needing help after 1,600 petrol stations shut across the country.
Six of France's eight refineries are currently closed as a result of industrial action, with activists holding protests outside.
