The police are set to contact organisers of the BHP Performance show after the A2 became gridlocked on Bank Holiday Monday.

Motorists heading to the Lydden Hill show on were stuck in traffic for more than three hours.

Both sides of the road were blocked.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "We are not responsible for traffic management at events.

"Kent Police was not advised of the event at Lydden on Monday

"We are a partner on the local Safety Advisory Group (SAG) and it is established practice that we are advised of such events through this process.

"Along with other partners, such as the local council and Kent County Council, we then work together with the organiser to give advice and guidance, to help them to provide a safe event."

A motorist who commented on Kent Online said: “It was the sheer volume of traffic with no police, marshals or any representatives from BHP or Lydden Hill taking any responsibility for the situation.

“We were stuck on the A2 for three hours before we gave up and went for the afternoon on the beach instead.

“For these large events there should be better traffic control on the main roads, faster entry to the event and pre-paid tickets if only to control numbers attending.”

Kent Police added:"Through the SAG we will contact the organiser in an attempt to avoid similar issues in future."
