A lorry has broken down on the A20 in Dover contributing to huge southbound tailbacks.

Police were called to the incident at 7am and remain on the scene.

A spokesman said: "Kent Police was called to reports of a broken down lorry in A20 Townwall Street, Dover, near the junction with Marine Parade.

"Recovery of the vehicle has been arranged, and is en route."

Reporter Victoria Chessum who passed the scene, said: "It is moving, it's not complete gridlock but the queues are going way back, I couldn't see how far."

Contrary to other news, Miss Chessum said Jubilee Way, in Dover, is clear.

Strong winds have also caused disruption to freight movement via the A20 as ferry companies delay sailings due to the conditions.

The Port of Dover said: "The Port of Dover and its ferry operators continue to operate a service despite adverse weather conditions.

"Ferries are arriving and departing safely with additional help from tugs to aid the berthing process and because of this we hope to keep delays to a minimum."

P&O Ferries has updated customers on Twitter over delays: "Traffic around the port of Dover is very congested please allow additional time to arrive."

DFDS Seaways also tweeted: "Departures to Calais still suspended due to bad weather, customers will be transferred to the next available sailing to Dunkerque."
