The Port of Dover is considering plans to dredge the Goodwin Sands for materials to use in its Dover Western Docks Revival development.

If plans go ahead, sand and gravel could be removed from the shifting sandbanks and used in the construction at the docks.

The redevelopment proposals at Dover include shops, hotels, bars and the creation of a new marina.

A spokesman for the Port of Dover said: “The Port of Dover is currently considering options, including Goodwin Sands, for sourcing aggregate for the approved Dover Western Docks Revival development which includes a cargo and distribution centre, transformed waterfront, job opportunities for local people and greater space within the Eastern Docks for ferry traffic.

“We are actively engaging with a wide range of conservation organisations and authorities prior to any decision being made. Goodwin Sands has been identified as a good source of aggregate by The Crown Estate.

“We are in the process of undertaking a thorough Environmental Impact Assessment and have been consulting with Kent Wildlife Trust and other consultees to ensure their concerns are fully taken into account.”

Some of these concerns relates to marine conservation as the area provides a habitat for seals and birds and is also the site of hundreds of historic shipwrecks.
