Queues are building as a large number of lorries head to the Port of Dover this afternoon.

The Dover TAP scheme was put in place just after 3pm today due to heavy freight traffic attempting to leave the county.

It means the left lane of the A20 coastbound is used for lorries only, while all other traffic uses the right hand lane.

Kent County Council's Highways said: "The Dover Traffic Access Protocol (TAP) scheme on the A20 at Aycliffe has been implemented due to heavy freight volumes.

"This is to prevent Portbound traffic from disrupting the local road network and the A20 through Dover town."

Dover TAP is a temporary traffic management system which queues port-bound lorries on the nearside to prevent congestion in the town.

Traffic lights hold back lorries until space at the Port of Dover becomes available.

It also means a 40mph speed restriction for all vehicles approaching the port and town.
