Traffic misery could come to an end for people attending high profile track days at Lydden Hill Race Circuit.

The owners have put in a planning application this week for new road access adding to the existing Geddinge Lane road.

In a planning statement it said: “The new road has been designed to accommodate the highest level of traffic on large event days, enabling up to 268 cars to queue within the site to alleviate traffic which currently queues on the A2.”

It is common for the A2 to become heavily congested when large events are scheduled at the Wootton venue.

If given the nod by planning officers at Dover District Council, it will also see the construction of a VIP centre, grand stands, a scrutineering building and a wash area for competitors.

These will just replace the existing functional buildings.

Their temporary nature, including portakabin toilets, gives the site a “poor visual appearance within the site” the statement said.

A gate house and 14 high tech engineering units are also incorporated in the plans.

The overhaul is set to open up the venue for more corporate and track days which includes training, racing and use for learner and advanced driver training schools.

It reads: “The proposed buildings will enable the site to operate in a modern way and provide adequate on-site storage and washroom facilities in appropriately designed modest buildings to replace existing portakabins and containers which are not ideal within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

“The new facilities will help the existing race circuit to maintain its position in the racing community as an excellent circuit whilst improving the visual appearance of the site.”

This application is set to be discussed at a planning meeting, a date of which is yet to be confirmed.
