The Highways Agency have started resurfacing parts of the A20 carriageway between Limekiln roundabout and Lord Warden Square.
The work is set to make journeys "safe" and "reliable" on the vital link road.
It will involve overnight closures, from 8pm - 6pm and is due to be completed, weather permitting, on Saturday morning.
Highways Agency project sponsor Anita Waterton said:“The existing surface is nearing the end of its life and will be resurfaced to provide drivers with smoother, quieter and safer journeys.
"We have planned the work with the help of the Port of Dover and will carry out the work overnight, when we know traffic flows are at their lowest, to minimise disruption.”
The A20 will be closed in both directions between the Limekiln roundabout and Lord Warden Square.
A clearly signed diversion route will be in place via the Prince of Wales roundabout.
