Dover fire crews and the police were called to Lorne Road last night to tackle a rubbish blaze inside a derelict factory.
Crews got there for 10.30, where they found that the building was already open.
No one was there when they turned up.
The on-duty watch manager felt the need to call the police so that they can get in contact with the owner - who can then secure the premises.
A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "They did call the police because of the situation - someone had got in there and set fire to a pile of rubbish."
The firefighters were there for under an hour as the fire was only "small."
