A weekly shopper at a Morrisons supermarket has told of their disgust at black mould growing on the ceiling.
The bacteria has been spotted in the Dover store for the past few weeks leading to concerns it could be causing harm to staff’s health but is due to be fixed imminently.
“My concern is that staff are constantly under the mould,” the shopper who visits every Monday with his grandparents told KentOnline.
“We can quickly walk past it but I’m worried about the workers – they’re going to be impacted by it.
“It’s disgusting to see in person. For the last four weeks, it has been getting worse over time.
“It is right above the freezer section so there is a lot of water melting which I think is making it worse.”
However, a spokesperson for Morrisons has confirmed the mould is down to a “major leak”.
They added: “We are having over 100 new panels delivered this week to replace the damaged ones.”
But the shopper says it has put him off using the supermarket.
“The Dover Morrisons is one of the biggest shops in the town and is close to my grandparents and it is the shop they want to go to,” he said.
“They can’t really go all the way to Tesco, they don’t drive so they are kind of forced to go to Morrisons.
“For me personally, I have sworn off Morrisons. I’ll go next door to Asda or much further afield.
“The mould is right by the exposed meat and fish. I’m not going there anymore.
“I was already looking for reasons to ditch Morrisons because I think it’s getting a bit expensive but that was the final straw.”
After spotting the mould, he shared pictures he took of it online and says it went “viral” in his local community.
“The response was overwhelming,” he said.
“People were commenting in shock and wondering why something wasn’t being done about it. Others were saying they refused to shop there.
“Once people notice it, it really does become an issue they want sorted.
“I was surprised at the amount of response the post had.”
