A study found that this area generated the sixth least amount of household waste, with 305kg per person per year.

This is 24% below the country's average.

The town also has the seventh highest recycling rate per capita, a rise of 3% over five years.

Dover has additionally seen a 33% decrease in fly-tipping in that time.

Coming top in the survey was Stroud, Gloucestershire, and second came Colchester in Essex.

Nottingham ranked as the most wasteful in England, followed by South Shields and Sunderland.

The study had covered more than 100 English towns and cities, comparing progress between 2014-15 and 2019-20.

It was by Bower Collective, an online service, which provides consumers with home and personal care products in reusable and refillable packaging.

It began in 2020 and now has more than 60,000 customers.
