THE White Cliffs of Dover have gained fourth place in a national poll of the UK’s favourite landmarks.

The cliffs beat other well known tourist attractions, such as the Houses of Parliament in London, the Eden Project in Cornwall and Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North at Gateshead.

Edinburgh Castle, Stonehenge and Blackpool Tower took the first three places in the poll and the cliffs were the only natural landmark to feature in the top 10.

More than one in ten voters (12 per cent) chose The White Cliffs of Dover as their favourite UK sight in the survey commissioned by printer manufacturer, Lexmark International.

National Trust property manager for the White Cliffs, Simon Ovenden, said he was delighted with the result.

"The White Cliffs of Dover have been an inspiration for centuries: they are recognised by millions worldwide and have an iconic role as one of the most enduring symbols of our island heritage," he said.

"No wonder so many people identify with them and want to visit and take photographs of them."

The accolade follows hot on the heels of another win for the White Cliffs of Dover, which came out top of a National Trust poll last autumn to discover the UK’s best-loved stretch of coastline owned by the National Trust. The Cliffs gained 22 per cent of the votes in the national Vote for the Coast competition, the results of which were announced in November.
