Dover Athletic 4 Marine 3 match report
16:57, 13 January 2018
Dover went through to the last 16 of the FA Trophy after seeing off Marine at Crabble this afternoon.
Four different Dover players got on the scoresheet as Chris Kinnear’s side saw off a tough test from a team two leagues below them.
Parry and Bird gave Dover a 2-1 lead going into half-time with Pinnock and Brundle’s good strikes enough to see them take a 4-3 win.
The Whites conceded two penalties, both converted by Mitchley, and survived a late scare after Michael Brewster scored five minutes from the end.
Marine had to play the entire second-half with 10 men after William Smart was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Manny Parry.
Parry gave Dover an early lead in the 6th minute when he headed home from five yards. Pinnock’s corner was headed straight in the air by Bird and Parry rose highest to score.
Marine hit back almost immediately when Mitch Walker conceded a penalty in the 10th minute. The Dover goalkeeper brought down James Short trying to claim a cross at the far post. Danny Mitchley calmly converted to bring the teams back level.
Ryan Bird put the Whites back in front on 28 minutes with a lovely headed goal. Ilesanmi was unchallenged down the left and was able to cross and find the striker free in the box.
Bird nearly added his second two minutes later when he headed Connor Essam’s cross just wide. Dover had a free-kick on the left, crossed in by Brundle over everyone, and Essam was on hand to play the ball back in to find Bird.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men two minutes before half-time when William Smart was shown a red. Smart lunged off the ground to win the ball off Manny Parry and was rightly given his marching orders.
Mitch Pinnock extended Dover’s lead with a beautiful curling shot into the top corner of the Marine goal after 53 minutes.
Ryan Bird did well to hold off his marker with the ball at his feet and found Pinnock who added his fifth goal of the season.
The visitors had their best chance of the half when the ball fell to captain Mitchley after 59 minutes. He held off Parry well and was able to get his shot away but Walker held on.
Dover’s advantage was cut 15 minutes before the end of the game after Mitchley converted his second penalty of the afternoon. Parry fouled the Marine forward in the box to give away the spot-kick.
The win was sealed in the 82nd minute after Mitch Brundle buried the ball in the back of the net from just inside the box. Jeffrey did well down the left to find his captain unmarked.
The home side had a late scare when Michael Brewster added Marine's third five minutes from the end but they held on to progress to the next round.
