Boss Jake Leberl enjoyed a much-needed Dover win on Saturday - and now wants more of the same.
Struggling Whites completed a National League South double over Slough at Crabble with striker George Nikaj scoring - but also being sent off - in a dramatic final 10 minutes of their 1-0 win.
It was just a third league victory this campaign for Dover, which moved them off the bottom of the table on goal difference ahead of Havant & Waterlooville. They had been 2-1 victors at Arbour Park in August.
Leberl said: “It’s a really nice feeling - and I want more of it, to be honest!
“The boys put a heck of a shift in and I’m really pleased with it all.
“The clean sheet, the effort, the organisation and the spirit, that was all spot-on today and we got our just rewards.”
Whites have lost half of their 30 league games this term but rarely have been outplayed, often beaten by a single goal.
“That’s what I have said all along, since I’ve been here, I know we have been down there, but it doesn’t feel like a bottom-of-the-league dressing room,” added Leberl. “The boys have been putting in shifts ever since the day I walked in.
“For whatever reason - maybe a bit of unluckiness, maybe a lack of organisation and a little bit of a lack of confidence - (things haven’t been going Dover’s way).
“But, today, everything seemed to come together and I’m really pleased for everyone at the club for us to get a win and three points.”
Nikaj calmly slotted past Slough goalkeeper Dan Lincoln - who has also played cricket for Kent - on the turn for the game’s only goal on 84 minutes.
Leberl noted: “George has got that.
“He has absolute bags of ability. I think, if we keep working with him, he’s only going to get better and better.
“I’d like to think he has a bright future ahead of him.”
Seconds after finding the net, Nikaj was handed a second caution by referee Matthew Norton, though, for a late challenge in midfield.
Leberl, now set to be without the suspended forward at Braintree next weekend, said: “I think he was still on cloud nine after scoring his goal! He just lost his way a little bit.
“It was a bad decision what he was actually trying to do in that part of the pitch and at that stage of the game.
“He should have put it into an area. But he took a few extra touches, then it got away from him and he lunged in.
“So, there’s no complaints.”
Leberl also offered his congratulations to rivals Maidstone after their historic FA Cup Fourth-Round 2-1 victory at Championship high-fliers Ipswich on Saturday.
Whites’ manager was given his Dover debut by then-boss Bill Williams, now chief executive of the Stones.
On Maidstone’s memorable victory, Leberl admitted: “It’s absolutely unbelievable, isn’t it?
“I know Bill Williams very well. He gave me my debut here when he was the manager.
“I have been to see Maidstone play a few times this season because we train around the corner. After training, I’ve popped in to see them and the teams that they have been playing.
“I’ve been very impressed. They’re a big, strong, powerful side.
“It’s an unbelievable result for them and I’m really pleased for them.
“It’s good for Kent football.”
