Former Chelmsford midfielder Matt Lock is aiming to rectify his lack of goals now he's at Dover

Matt Lock scored just once in 30 games for Conference South side Chelmsford City last season.

The 30-year-old midfielder says he is determined to improve on that disappointing statistic now he’s at Dover.

And Lock, one of Whites’ six summer signings, has made a good start.

He scored Dover’s first goal of the season in Vanarama Conference after getting the equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Grimsby on Saturday.

It was Lock’s competitive debut for Chris Kinnear’s side after a hamstring niggle caused him to sit out the season opener against FC Halifax while he was an unused substitute against Braintree.

Lock, who started his career at Exeter City – a side he made 30 Football League appearances for – said he was “buzzing” after getting on the scoresheet.

He said: “I don’t score as many goals as I should do, so I am keen to rectify that this season.

“To score on my debut and help us earn our first point of the season is a great feeling and long may it continue.”

But how did Lock, who lives in Essex, come to be at Crabble?

He said: “I wasn’t looking at anything other than staying at Chelmsford but it got to a stage when negotiations seemed to be going nowhere.

“I put a few feelers out and had a chat with Jake (Dover assistant manager Jake Leberl) and he invited me down for a trial.

“It went well and I am delighted to be here.”

Lock, a personal trainer, is into yoga and he said some of his new team-mates had sounded him out about it, while others had a laugh.

He said: “It helps me but it’s a personal choice. It would be a good laugh to see some of the lads try and touch their toes.”
